A place for everything, and everything in its place?

Murano Glass Bead Trays – Barcoded & Priced in Color Waves

‘A place for everything, and everything in its place.’ is the famous quote by Isabella Mary Beeton in her book of Household Management written in 1861. It’s a great philosophy, but with some 20,000 SKUs, it’s easier said than done.

When we began importing Murano Glass Beads, we named them after the bead maker, their children, vaporetto boat stops, favorite cafes. Our bead makers named the designs after artists, famous names in Venice which encouraged our lack of organization. We had only a few drawers of beads. But over time we grew! Tanya took on our beads as a project in her senior year in Business Management at the University. So began our ‘semi-intelligent’ SKU assignment.

Venetian Beads – Melanie Picking Orders

But the physical location of beads in an orderly fashion took a few more years. We all remembered where items were stored by sheer memory. And I confess to loving how the beads looked in drawers so I could see all the colors of a style when I opened the drawer. And seeing bunches of beads together made it easy to design jewelry. But it became apparent that it made for inefficient storage. Then we began the Location/SKU assignment and bar coding. This was key when we went to lots of bead shows, as we couldn’t remember prices for 800 pounds of beads we took to shows and sometimes exhibiting at 2 shows at the same time. Our bar coding let us check customers out quickly, accurately, giving them an itemized list of what they bought, along with SKUs for reordering online…certainly a novelty in a bead shows.

Locations and Alpha-Numerical Makes Picking Orders is Easier
Picking Orders – For All of You!

Picking is made easy with our rolling carts with all the supplies you need to pack an order. We all have our favorite cart!

Venetian Glass Beads, Organized

These little white cubicle boxes are where orders with problems go. This is not where you want your orders to linger. We send emails through our online store system to you or call to let you know.

This is not where you want your order to go! The problem boxes.

There’s more, we’re just trying to organize it. There are always the “orphans” the beads that have no mates, the I thought I ordered Red, how did these green beads arrive? And many other projects just waiting to be put on the web. And an abundance of design projects in various stages of completion.

So maybe we’d better read Mrs. Beeton’s book, again! ;>)

What began as a fascination with the glass of Murano has become a way of life. Our webstore has all you will need to make jewelry, quality findings, stringing materials, Swarovski Crystals and a lot more, but our main focus is the Venetian Glass Bead. We have been an integral part in promoting Venetian glass beads throughout the world as well as helping to breathe new life into traditional Venetian techniques. A few years ago, we introduced our line of Venetian Dichroics to the US through as a result of years of efforts with our beadmakers in Murano. We continue to bring new and innovative ideas to this age old industry. Most recently, we developed the Furnace Glass along with our partner furnace in Venice. It's a blend of old glass making techniques to work with new fashion ideas. We remain a family owned business located in Santa Clara and Sunnyvale, CA, USA where we have been importing Venetian Glass and Murano Glass commercially since 1993. 1. PaxAngel – I love all kinds of art. Personally I am a crazy quilter & enjoy the freedom it allows to be creative. Rules, but you don't need to follow unless you want to. You are allowed to be creative on your own.

This sounds like me trying to organize my beads, except I don’t have as many (darn it!!). I wish you luck, I get sidetracked in the looking, too!

I think maybe the problem is that creative people have trouble organizing – we just love the way they look in heaps!

  2. inplainenglishcom – It seems as though I’ve been studying about, talking, teaching, and learning about marketing my entire life. In fact, my entire career has been about marketing … and marketing content writing. I started out as a writer, creating press relations and helping clients get “ink” about their businesses and their personal accomplishments. I was a journalist for a daily newspaper and then worked at advertising agencies and marketing firms, learning and honing my craft. One thing that has always amazed me is the tendency for small business to eagerly tell others about what they do, rather than about how their prospects might benefit from the solutions they provide. A subtle difference? Not really. I believe strongly in answering the question, “What’s in it for me?” And… I believe the most effective way to do that is in “plain English.” I decided to write a marketing blog because my mission has always been to help small and mid-size businesses understand what marketing is all about (… it’s not sales, by the way) and to strategize a plan using the most appropriate, affordable, and effective marketing tools to implement the plan for success. I love the way marketing has evolved and how it has grown to include a variety of digital tools, but this variety has created lots of confusion about which marketing tools are “right.” (No, it isn’t always advertising.) Confusion breeds paralysis or procrastination at the very least. My blogs are my way of sharing best practices without confusion … in plain English.

Very impressive! I love when I’m searching for just the right bead and come across one, saying: Oh, my goodness, I forgot I bought these! They will work perfectly!
